By no means does this girl need any introduction so how about
I tell you how we got introduced? A little over two years I was
trying to get any girl I could to shoot with me. I came across a
lot of shitty ones so I decided to hire one that knew what the
fuck she was doing. A couple of weeks later I booked this girl
named Shay Maria. By this time she was already very well
known due to her amazing “features”. I was really excited to
work with her but also super nervous because I still didn't
completely understand what I was doing (I still sometimes
don't).
Fast forward to the day of the shoot. Shay comes over to my
make-shift studio (a garage) and is greeted by Mitchell and
myself drinking 40oz beers. We talk for a few moments and
then get to work. Right away I could tell the difference
between Shay and the girls I was shooting prior to working with
her. Every time I clicked the shutter she switched her pose and
had tons of energy. It made me want to work harder to capture
how awesome she was. By the end of the shoot we both could
tell that we creatively dug each others vibe and personality (in
a completely professional aspect).
A year laterI booked her for my birthday party. I wanted to do a
live shoot with some girls so of course I wanted to use Shay.
Once again we created some awesome shit together but this
time I shot a video and it took the Internet by storm. As you can
imagine it helped us both out on a promotional level.
Nine months goes by and I am starting to make a little ripple in
the photography game. Shay and myself talk about things and
decide that we need to work together for 2012 to try to
advance our careers as a team. That is exactly what we are
starting to do. We both have the same work ethic and share a
very honest and genuine friendship. Having these key
ingredients allows us to execute our goals as a team.
Last month we went over to Dj Fashens apartment (a very
secret location due to the amount of expensive art) and once
again made magic. I decided to use mostly natural light to
switch up the feel from our normal lighting characteristics. We
both obviously like to try new things because this is the first
time Shay has ever been naked at a shoot. I am glad that we
showcased everything in a very soft and upscale way thanks to
our vision and the tremendous amount of taste that Fashen has
in contemporary art and furniture.
I hope you guys enjoy this feature of one of my dear friends and favorite girls to photograph. For those of you advanced internet users you can read the column that I wrote to the left. For the rest, I am working on getting the Flip-Book Project from this set (plus photos I didn't post) available at select newsstands on Fairfax Ave.
